Latest news,
A few things since we updated the news page last: first of all, the
South Devon Players are now affiliated with NODA (the National Operatic
& Dramatic Association).
From September onwards, we are also moving to two rehearsals per week, the main rehearsal remains on the Wednesday evenings, but we will also be introducing "odds and ends" or special "certain scenes only" rehearsals on Sunday afternoons. This means that not everyone needs to be there every Sunday, but it will allow for extra rehearsals and smoothing of the rough bits.
Les Miserables rehearsals are really underway superbly, and we will be producing the show posters within the next month, with in-character/ on location photos of our cast.

Les Miserables auditions reminder
Les Miserables Reminder! : The South Devon Players theatre company,
Brixham are holding open auditions for an exciting and challenging new
amateur theatre production in Torbay - a new non-musical adaptation of
Victor Hugo's classic story. All seriously interested people are welcome
to audition, there are large and small roles to be cast.
Les
Miserables; The Memoirs of Jean Valjean is a new non-musical theatre show, based
directly on Victor Hugo’s thrilling novel of redemption, love and revolution,
set in 19th Century France. The South Devon Players are performing
this show in September 2013 around Torbay, and have announced open auditions for the production.
Whether you are ten or eighty, there are large and small roles available and
the auditions are open to both members and new people as well.
People new
to acting and performing are welcome.
All we ask
is that if you are aged under 16 (there are three child roles), that you are
accompanied by a parent or guardian, and that all performers are reliable; able
to rehearse on Wednesday evenings, and available for the shows, in September.
The
auditions will take the form of script readings on Wednesday May 15th
2013, at 7pm, at Chestnut Heights
Community Centre, Poplar Close, Brixham TQ5 0SA. Rehearsals commencing the
following Wednesday (same time/ venue).
As well as
performers, we are also looking for front of house helpers, and set/ stage
hands too, so if you do not feel like performing, there are plenty of other
ways to get involved in the show.
Please note
that Act 2 of the show is likely to contain strobe or light flashes.
The South
Devon Players theatre company are an award-winning, completely non-profit community/
amateur theatre company founded in 2005, based in Brixham and featured on BBC 1
national television in January 2013. We mainly specialise in shows about local
history, but sometimes expand to wider historical events (as in the case of
this production) as well. We are family friendly, lively and welcoming to all
who wish to be involved in theatre at any level. In the past, members have gone
on to perform in major feature films, and train at RADA. Our membership ranges
from age 10 to 65, and from professional performers to complete beginners, all
of whom work as part of a team to create new exciting shows which are then brought
to our local community.
Les
Miserables: The Memoirs of Jean Valjean will be directed by one of the theatre
company’s founders; Miss Laura J, who as well as being a professional performer
and model in her own right, also holds a Masters degree in teaching performing
arts, as well as degrees in film production, and photography – and has
performed in another production of Les Miserables in the past, elsewhere. She
is accompanied by Mrs Louise German, as assistant director. Louise is the other co-founder of the South
Devon Players, who has decades of community and amateur theatre experience in
her own right. Both are experienced directors, and looking forward to joining
you to create the biggest show the South Devon Players have yet produced.

A is for Auditions
In between our other news articles from the group, we are starting a
series of articles which are intended (work, volunteering etc going
according to plan) to comprise an A-Z on theatre for beginners. The
articles may be spasmodic as we have a huge turnaround of shows
including tackling a production of Les Miserables, so these will be
posted as one of us has time to sit down and write one – sorry about
that!
The first one:
A is for Auditions.
So, you have seen an audition listed somewhere – maybe on a website, maybe a poster in town, or maybe a friend has told you about it. You may have wanted to get involved in acting for a long time, or you may just like the idea of that particular show, or be looking for a new hobby. Maybe you are lucky enough to find an audition for some paid acting work. But what is going to happen? What are people going to expect of you?
Common questions I see on Yahoo! Answers often ask “I have seen an audition, but I have no idea how to prepare or what to do for it!”. Now any audition advertisement should have some way to contact the production company or casting director for queries. If you are really unsure what to do (if the advert does not, for example, tell you to prepare a song or monologue), no serious director or production company is going to mind your contacting them and asking for more information. Or you could search on Google for the company website to find out more about them. In amateur or community groups, you may be expected to take part in group script readings, from the show script, as your audition.
There are common pitfalls when auditioning. I always expect auditionees to arrive on time, show respect for others in the room (so not playing on phones/ ipods, eating a McDonalds, talking loudly over those auditioning, taking the mick out of those auditioning, etc), and to bring a pen and a diary.
Always bear in mind that not everyone can have the lead roles. It is not a slight on your acting ability. Usually a director is also taking into consideration how well you might “look the part” – so for example, a ten year old girl could not hope to be considered for the role of an elderly gentleman, however well she read the part- and will cast according to physical appearance described or suggested by the script, coupled with the actors ability. I also look at the apparent respect and good manners shown towards others and the rehearsal space, even when the person is not in the group of people currently in an audition reading.
If you are not cast in a huge role, and are offered a smaller one, then put all the energy and effort you can into that. A story is often told in our group about a show seen by some members where an “extra” who had no lines at all, but who was on stage a lot, almost stole the show from the leads, by their superb acting and who impressed a lot of people.
While some people level the comment at some amateur theatre groups that directors or groups have “favourites”, this is not the case with us. We look simply at someones overall suitability for the roles in the show, and as part of the team. Sometimes a new member may get a lead, sometimes a veteran member. You can never tell. Some groups may not cast new members in lead roles, simply over concerns about the reliability of a new person they do not know – which leads us on to the next paragraph! (and goes back to the previous paragraph about doing any role, large or small, with real effort!)
PLEASE be honest about your availability. Some people audition, then once cast, realise that they are not available on rehearsal days, or that they had a holiday booked on the show days. It is critically important that you do not waste other people’s time if you know you cannot commit. While people do understand if you fall ill or something, timewasting or “just auditioning for a laugh” is likely to get you mentally branded as unreliable by the director, so if you wanted to seriously come back in the future, you may have shot yourself in the foot, as is also the case over tantrums about “not getting the starring role”.
Whether the show is an amateur show, or a professional show, you are still expected to behave in a professional manner and take the audition, and your commitment, seriously. Film and TV companies do approach groups looking for actors and extras (sometimes paid) and so you could have the beginnings of professional opportunities as well. Maintaining a professional attitude from the get-go is not only expected by everyone else in the theatre group (after all, you are hoping to be involved in a theatre production performed to a paying audience) but is good practice for you as well.
And that is the bare bones of good audition practice. You are always welcome to comment with any questions! Next time, B for Being An Actor

Resurrection Bob latest, Les Mis show date changes, volunteers needed,...
Resurrection Bob is almost fully cast, we are still looking for someone to play the dashing naval officer Davies, for the final scene, and rehearsals are underway, with show venues being booked in the next seven days. We have a fantastic cast, with a mixture of old and new faces.
The planned show dates for Les Miserables:The Memoirs of Jean Valjean have changed - we were going to be performing over the third weekend of August, however, we have had to change the dates to Sept 6th, 7th, 8th, (along with a possible on Sept 5th). Show venues are planned to be Brixham, Paignton, and Torquay, and enquiries are being made into performing in Dartmouth as well.
With these two shows running, and the group growing, we are looking for volunteers to help with backstage duties; which have previously been performed by cast members - but with these two shows, especially Les Miserables, we really need to look at finding people who would be able to help with these duties as a dedicated role. We are looking for set-builders, stage hands, front of house (front desk, audience refreshments, greeting audience etc), and makeup people. a full list is on our website at http://southdevonplayers.weebly.com/volunteers--employability.html . So if you have those skills to offer, and would like to develop them, get references for jobseeking or college, with a lively friendly theatre group, please get in touch!

The Ballad of Resurrection Bob, our spring show about the famous
smuggler of Brixham, is now almost fully cast. We do have one male role

Wednesday. Well done to all the cast, and welcome to all the new members
of the group!
We also have a new Facebook page (as part of sorting out our social networks pages, at https://www.facebook.com/SouthDevonPlayersTheatreCompanyBrixham?ref=hl

The performances will take place late April/ Early May 2013. Auditions at 7 for 7.30pm, at Chestnut Heights Community Centre, Brixham, rehearsals taking place from the following Wednesday at the same time (until around 9/ 9.30pm).You are most welcome to come with a friend if you wish.

Mainly actors required but are a couple of sea-shanties to be sung as well. In past centuries, smuggling of silks, tobacco and brandy, was rife along the coasts of the Southwest, and the smugglers invented ever more creative, and in some cases very humourous tactics to evade the law. “Resurrection” Bob, faked his own death to transport contraband to Totnes, under the noses of the coastguards, in a very large coffin. Later that night, the story tells, the local coastguards encountered Bob on the highway, and were convinced that they had seen a ghost. Performers needed ages 16 - 75, previous experience is not required (what is required, is commitment and the ability to function in a hard-working friendly team) There is no payment as we are a non-profit, voluntary group with a turnover of less than £1,000. However, other 'perks' are available free of charge eg: free photoshoot/ video clips/ references!

Well, it went pretty well. Saturday night in Brixham was full, and Sunday afternoon in Torquay needed extra chairs being brought out as the place was packed to the rafters... One actor went ill with the winter bugs going around so with about three hours notice, one of the other cast had to pitch in, but pulled it off really well.
The Sunday charity performance in Torquay raised a fair bit for the local food bank, which we were delighted to support.
Tomorrow, Jan 16th 2012, we are on BBC 1 - as one of the "activities" on BBC Escape to the Country, broadcasting at 3pm.
And then, a weeks breather, and we start rehearsals for The Ballad of Resurrection Bob the true historical tale of a local smuggler who faked his own death to get contraband past the coastguards. (open auditions on Jan 23rd - see http://southdevonplayers.weebly.com/auditions.html for audition details) ,,,
